Sable Vested Night
Title
Sable Vested Night
Description
Sable Vested Night shows a figure of a woman standing among two types of larger-than-life flowers with some birds overhead. One type of flower is a white and yellow orchid, and three grow from the right side of this painting, with a few large green and yellow leaves. On the ground is a large pink and white carnation, painted so thinly that the background is visible through it. Facing the flower on the right is the figure of the red haired woman in profile view, wearing a long white dress with a high collar, and a somewhat oval shaped headdress. A black owl is sitting on top with its wings outstretched, and they are both dwarfed by the flowers. In the upper left hand corner is a blue bird in flight but with its wings pulled back behind it. Just above the orchids are two geese also in flight, one with its wings up and the other with its pointed down. The background seems to have been added in after, meeting the edges of the flowers in a slightly darker shade than the rest of the sky. It is a series of small, tight brushstrokes in red, blue, green, yellow, and white, and creating a hard horizon line against a dark blue ground.
