Title

Rain, Rain Go Away
Rain at Muscle Shoals (1933)

Description

The ground of this painting has large sweeping colorful brushstrokes that span the work. The rain pours down is the form of dripped paint that has been allowed to run down the canvas. The rainy area dominates the canvas while the flowers are pushed back to either side of the “rain cloud.” The green leaves and stems of the flowers are almost transparent but they are outlined in heavier opaque lines. The paint on the petals is applied more thickly. There is a sense that artist added the flowers at the end of the process to balance the heavy dark cloud that encompasses the majority of the painting. Fetherston described this work, stating "A thunderstorm is approaching. Love and thunderstorms do not go together, so the orchids are saying, Rain, rain go away", hence the title of the work.
